How to Feed Your Brain: The Book is OUT NOW!
A little later than anticipated, but here it is, finally published!
As it says on the back cover of How to Feed Your Brain, everything you eat affects the way your brain works.
(If I can’t convince you, perhaps the puppy will.)
How to Feed Your Brain is big on information, guidance, and tips. It is a distilled version of the science, with the focus directly on what you need to know and what you need to do, to maximise your brain function. Everything is given in simple, practical terms.
It’s an ancient story. Your brain didn’t just show up the day you were born - it’s a sublime product of biochemical engineering that was set in motion millions of years ago. And it’s a fundamental truth that our brains’ nutritional requirements haven’t changed over time, just because our diets have.
I got so deep into researching and writing this book that it felt like it had become a part of me. I went off in directions that I didn’t expect to go in; down rabbit holes I didn’t know existed. Time travelling through our evolutionary history, I discovered how the human brain developed, and how that development was driven by the food we ate.
Our ancestral diet tripled the size of the human brain, turning it into a superpower. But all that is changing: the food we eat now is putting the brain at risk of power failure and disease.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Positive changes can bring about a rapid turnaround in mental health.
As a nutritionist, it has always been clear to me that to understand what makes the brain work at full capacity, you have to understand the role of digestion, of metabolism, and of the endocrine system. You have to see how everything is linked, and how food is always at the helm, directing operations. It is the source of the brain’s energy and structure. It can work for you, or against you.
I’ve been working in nutrition for thirty years. I see clients for a vast array of conditions, from head to toe. And always, in among all the physical symptoms are the mental health problems. From poor memory to anxiety, brain fog to depression… and the worries about developing dementia in later life.
This book is for anyone wishing to optimise brain function now, and protect it for the future.
As some of you know, I have been writing articles about diet and mental health for several years on Medium under the publication Feed Your Brain, and more recently on Substack. Many of those articles informed the book. Here are a few of the lovely comments on those Feed Your Brain articles that I’ve received:
What great advice Maria. You give by far the best advice I have ever read from a nutritionist.
Huge fan here. I love the way you deliver the recommendation along with science without getting too deep in the weeds.
As soon as I see your name, I know the article will be excellent. Thank you.
Wow! This is great writing and research. You bring light to darkness many of us fear. Dementia is not inevitable, it is lifestyle, how else fin (sic) you explain superagers who never get it.

Fantastic article, thank you. My father died from early-onset Alzheimer's at age 60and now, at 83, my mother has it. I quit drinking and stopped eating sugar. Now I'll add more targeted IF to my life. I appreciate your work. Thank you again.
Thoughtful and well written, as usual. Thanks. Love your stuff.
This was a really fascinating read. I’m gluten intolerant and suffer from severe migraines. All of these factors you mention seem to fall inline with how I feel at times.
Crisp writing and excellent points, Maria!
