Back in the late 70s, early 80s, the American Heart Association was selling the idea that fat caused heart disease, and cholesterol was deadly. The food companies quickly adapted, creating lines of "fat-free" products. Nabisco came out with a cookie (biscuit in proper English) called "Snackwell" that was chocolate-covered, marshmallow (or something like it) filling, and FAT FREE. Stores could not keep them in stock, and rabid consumers (guilty as charged, claiming ignorance as a defense) would roam from store to store in search of them. As you stated, all of the removed fat was replaced with sugar. Of course I know the truth now, but it's still very difficult to find full-fat products, yogurt in particular. I always buy it plain, adding my own fresh fruit, nuts, etc., but sometimes go with fat-free if it's also free of sugar or anything else. Thanks to your explanation, I won't be doing that any more.

I'm quite shocked to learn that it is so hard for you to find the full-fat version of products like yogurt. At least here there's always the choice, even if the packaging is way too similar for my liking. All that damage that was done so many years ago, still the accepted wisdom/ignorance.

Yes. My siblings who bought into the fat is bad dogma are still convinced that margarine is good and animal fats are bad, etc. They are overweight, have serious medical concerns, take various medications, and complain a lot. I’m the opposite, at 63. No health problems. Slim. They still tell me I’m wrong by the way. That’s how powerful the conditioning is.

Jo the cook wants Jim the Geek to know that making yogurt at home is simple, reliable, cost-effective, delicious, and best of all, a lot more nutritious for you and your gut bugs than the finest commercial product. I make mine using raw milk I get from a farmer. As long as a commercial milk is not UHT (ultra high temp) pasteurized it will make a good yogurt, for literally no cost. I can’t understand why so many people think commercial is better. It never is. Making your own is the best option of all. My kefir is a powerhouse of nutrition.
